I have no previous writing experience. Can I still apply?
Absolutely. We encourage and welcome all to apply. We are much more concerned with a particular candidate's attitude than in their writing skills. Better writing skills can be taught to a willing and able individual, strong work ethic and drive to succeed generally cannot. If you can learn, type average speed or better and handle the rigors of travel, you can be successful in this position.
What are the position requirements?
Each of the requirements are minimal, however essential to the position. Candidates must be:
- 18 or older
- Able to travel locally & Semi-locally.
- Able to be flexible and tolerate diverse situations and environments when researching plotlines
- Able to take and type dictation
What will I be doing?
Writers create in collaborative teams of two, occasionally three individuals. First, writers meet with their collaborators and developers, brainstorming story ideas. Based on various factors including strong test audience scores and whether we can produce the story within budget, our staff will carefully select stories to produce into audiobooks. Once our staff has selected the subject matter, writing collaborators begin research, story boarding and character development. Finally, writers type the actual text that becomes the final audiobook. Once text is completed, the process of converting the story into an audiobook takes our developers about 15-20 days for a short story, and about 35-50 days for a full length novel.
What kind of compensation is included?
We provide the very best terms in the industry with regards to independent artists profit sharing contracts, bar none. The position includes a $100 signing bonus. Additionally, writers receive an unheard of 50% of all net revenues created from work they help write; 60% if the work being published is their original story. That includes all merchandising royalties & Advertising revenues. This translates to anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars per short story, depending upon popularity. When writers are traveling while conducting research, we provide transportation costs such as a Greyhound, Amtrak or Megabus ticket, and all other public transportation expenses. It also includes a $10 per day cash food stipend. Essentially, we provide the production, post-production and marketing budgets, you provide the talent. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the right individual.
What is the research & character development step like?
This process requires an individual who is flexible and is comfortable in diverse situations. This step is the fun part, however it does have a few challenges. You and your writing collaborator will be traveling locally and semi-locally, visiting historical sites, libraries and numerous other places of interest. For instance, to provide a few completely generic examples, if writers were creating an audiobook about an early 20th century jewelry store heist, our team would head to an architecture college to review historical schematics. Or if perhaps writers were creating a story about a band of underground dwelling humanoids, our team would explore an abandoned amusement park if possible or research anti-social group dynamics. If writers were creating a story in which the main character was a female rodeo champion, our team would head to a rodeo to research the lifestyle, or if the charterer was a male lifeguard, we would head to a beach and observe the happenings of the lifeguard staff. Writers then apply their newly acquired knowledge into creating a highly entertaining work. These of course are not real stories that we would publish, they are simply examples to provide a frame of reference. For confidentiality purposes, we have to be slightly vague as to not give away details of future productions.
How often will I have to travel?
This process requires travel about once, sometimes twice per month. This is a fun position. But this is a serious company, with a serious business model. We assign a total budget of about $2500 per story. This includes production, post-production, advertising and travel/research costs. The further we can stretch the budget, the farther we can travel!
It sounds like a great opportunity, but no job is perfect. What's the catch?
The catch is you will have to work hard to succeed. Yes, traveling around to different places is exciting and creating an original production is extremely fun. However, anything worth doing is not always easy. It will take a significant amount of time to produce and build a body of work, promote it and turn it into profit. It will not happen over night.
The facts are there are millions of content creators in the world. Do not think for one second it won't take hard work to separate yourself from the rest. It will require combining strict discipline with immense drive and dedication. It means pushing ourselves longer, harder and farther than our competition. However, If you are able to set yourself apart from the crowd, the end result can be very rewarding. If you are the right person that is not scared of tough situations, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
I did not have very good grades in School. Is there a minimum G.P.A. required for the position?
No. We have seen with our own eyes that some individuals do not flourish while in the public school atmosphere, but do flourish when outside of the system. In many cases grades can reflect stability of home life or measure improperly motivated students, not intellectual capacity. We will of course take good grades into primary consideration, however you will in no way be penalized for a low G.P.A.
I have had disciplinary issues or I have said some things or have videos about me online that stigmatize me. Will that prevent me from qualification?
No, not at all. You are a human. Humans make mistakes. We believe in second chances and in most cases, third or fourth ones too. It's O.K. to have said or done things that you regret, that have been misconstrued or are unpopular. We're really not concerned about the silly Bush or Obama comment you made, the embarrassing whatever video or any other speech or action deemed offensive by some. Just be honest and tell us.
Disclosure is key. We will address any concerns we may have with you and evaluate your situation fairly, on an individual basis. To error is a human quality, to forgive and accept does not seem to be.
